Stray Dogs & Lone Wolves: A Samurai Film Guide
Stray Dogs & Lone Wolves is a self-described Samurai Film Handbook written by Patrick Galloway in 2005.
The purpose of the book is to introduce essential samurai films to newcomers of the genre, provide background information to seasoned veterans. The book also provides availability details for readers so they can purchase these films themselves.
Mission
There are many parts to the book including a brief history of the samurai, a brief history of the genre, background information on the key directors and actors, and tips on how to acquire the films. I would like this fanpage simply to exist to document the films reviewed in the book, broken down by era (as displayed in the book). See it as a checklist, see it as a primer, see it however you'd like. Maybe at some point I'll want to add in brief Director/Actor biographies and possibly studio rundowns or other details.
Unless you own a copy of this book, please do not add to or edit this fanpage. Do not add any films, the list is complete.
The Films
The Studios
Just as Hollywood had its Big Five movie studios in the '30s (Warners, Fox, Paramount, MGM, and RKO), so Tokyo had its own Big Five in the post–World War II period: Toho, Daiei, Shochiku, Toei, and Nikkaatsu1).
