Santo vs. el Estrangulador (Santo vs. the Strangler) was Santo’s 9th movie and is one of his hardest to find films. Strangely, the sequel to this picture, El Espectro del Estrangulador (The Ghost of the Strangler) is easily available but for some reason this earlier film remains quite rare.

Synopsis: A mysterious killer has been strangling women in a variety theater, and the police decide to bring Santo into the investigation. Santo suspects the killer is hiding undercover as one of the theater employees and must discover his true identity before more women are murdered.

This is a decent film with a strong cast, and the plot is a basic variation of the Phantom of the Opera. Because it’s set in a variety theater, there are quite a few song numbers, including some American standards such as Peggy Lee’s “Fever” and Merle Travis’ “16 Tons” (sung in English by teen idol Alberto Vázquez).

The Xvid is based on a VHS tape, apparently taken from a TV broadcast recorded several years ago and copied 2 or 3 times since then. The picture is better than my previous upload of Profanadores de Tumbas but the soundtrack is somewhat noisier.
