- Azureus - full-featured Java torrent client, runs on any platform with Java but can be something of a performance hog.
- Deluge - essentially a remake of uTorrent, but open-source and multiplatform.
- MakeTorrent - tool for creating torrents.
- rTorrent - ncurses-based torrent client for *nix users; extremely lightweight without sacrificing useful features.
- Transmission - GUI client for *nix and OSX, now accepted everywhere and steadily growing in popularity.
Movie Playback
- Combined Community Codec Pack - our recommended codec pack, which comes bundled with our recommended media player, Media Player Classic.
- Media Player Classic - lightweight freeware media player, with the appearance of WMP 6.
- MPlayer - a Linux media player with frontends for just about every other OS.
- VLC Media Player - multiplatform media player, available on pretty much every OS out there. Uses its own internal codecs, so no need for external codec packs.
Editing/Ripping/Burning
- AcidRip - a DVD ripping Linux frontend for MEncoder.
- AutoGK - our recommended tool for ripping DVDs to XVID.
- Avidemux - another basic movie editing program, more modern features than VirtualDub but a less handsome interface. Handles VBR audio headers correctly.
- ConvertXtoDVD - extremely simple program for converting and burning DivX/XviD to DVD.
- HandBrake - multiplatform DVD ripper with support for more formats and containers, recommended for Mac users (as they get the best version of it). Only works with full DVDs, not individual VOB/MPEGs.
- ImgBurn - sick of Nero? ImgBurn is our recommended burning program, and is free to boot.
- MPEG4 Modifier - This program modifies a MPEG4 video (XviD, DivX) without re-encoding (aspect ratio, userdata, packed bitstream…). Removing Packed Bitstream improves standalone compatibility.
- RipIt4Me - This software is a freeware utility that helps you backup your copy protected DVDs.
- VirtualDub - recommended basic freeware movie editing program.
